Using Google Image Search

In CDH Staff by Staff Writer0 Comments

In the interest of making sure we follow copyright laws and to be sure we don’t plagiarize anyone’s work, we need to start citing atributions to the authors of the images in our memes. The best way to find out more information about an image you have found is to search for it using Google Image Search.

I’ve attempted to write a simple step-by-step instruction sheet on how to do it.

First, find the image you want to vette. You don’t have to have a local copy of it on your hard drive, you can have a URL for it. Just be sure the URL is for the actual image and not just for the page where the image resides. The image URL will typically end in .jpg or .png or some other image extension.

For the purpose of this article, I’ve selected a meme that we posted:

Meme to search

Because the image contains text (granted, it’s our text, but it could be someone else’s), I cropped the image to remove the text. Google Image Search will search a partial image, but is unlike to recognize the image with foreign text or logos on it.
