Cold Dead Hands Reviews: 2Hawks Tomahawks

“This settlement, based on the original fur trading post, is the oldest city in the state and is known as ‘The Birthplace of Montana.’ The post is now being completely rebuilt, and will soon rival Fort Union as an example of a working trading post of the 1800’s. Fort Benton (about 40 miles north of Great Falls on US Highway 87) is the gateway to the Upper Missouri River National Monument, and headquarters for several outfitters who furnish canoes and guided floats down the only part of the river which has been virtually unchanged since Lewis and Clark first saw it in 1805.

“Fort Benton was ‘head of navigation’ on the Missouri during steamboat days, and the equipment used in developing the gold and silver mines near Virginia City and Helena was brought by water to this inland port and then transported by ox-wagon trains to the mining districts. The historic Grand Union Hotel, built in the 1880’s, has been completely restored and is now open for occupancy, just as it was in the steamboat days on the River.

After that little bit of research, combined with my captivated fascination, I contacted Devin regarding the creation of our association with his company. He agreed to send me the “War Beast” hawk to review and bless his heart, I will never forget him for doing so. I cannot explain that feeling as I stared into the package the day it arrived. My mouth started to water just a bit… as my eyes widened at the sight. It didn’t stop there though, but worsened as I held it in my hands, and as my breathing increased a bit, I truly felt as though I were holding the cherished possession of  an 1870’s Montana ‘mountain man’. The balance and feel was much better than I anticipated and the tri-bladed (4″ main with 1.75″ secondaries) hammer-polled head was so beautiful, yet intensely menacing as well. The hardened, leather-sharpened edges are honed to razor-sharp precision, so much so, that shaving with this hawk is definitely possible.

2Hawks Warbeast TomahawkNow, as far as the functionality of this masterpiece of timeless craftsmanship, I believe it to be unparalleled to any of its contemporaries. The balance is incredible, so throwing this hawk with supreme accuracy is absolutely achievable (with practice of course), and its use as a fighting tool is most definitely in its wheelhouse as well. You can use this tool with confidence, knowing Devin guarantees the head for 25 years.

I could go on and on, singing the praises of the 2Hawks design or try to explain the conundrum of this ‘old world’ craftsman named Devin Price, who’s been misplaced in a time of ‘overrated, overpriced mass produced bladed tools’, but truthfully the only thing that will convince you of my words is to hold this finely handmade classic in your own hands. Although some might think these hawks are a bit pricey, I assure you, in the world of custom-made, they are a bargain at twice the price. In fact, I’m not sure why they are priced so low, but my suggestion is to buy one or two now, because it is not going to be long before these are in high demand and regarded as the best hawks available. I am very proud to be able to present these for sale to our readers, and thankful to Devin for the opportunity to sell such a quality product.

I want to leave all of our readers with this last piece of research I found regarding the wisdom of this young man, when he decided to secure the designs and processing of the 2Hawk brand.

Bob Thalmann Passes on the Torch
May 11th 2006
To all of our customers, past, present and future, I would like to introduce you to the person who bought the late Bob “Two Hawks” Thalmann’s business. His name is Devin Price, he is an apprentice and will be making the hawks and knives the way “Two Hawks” did – from scratch. He has all of Bob’s materials and patterns. Devin has been doing this for some time, starting much the same way my dad did in the family garage. His first goal is to the customers on the waiting list.

We feel very comfortable and honored that we found someone that can carry on this art as well as making a business for himself. I’m sure he will add more to his business in time. We want to thank everyone for your patience with us in selling the business, but finding someone was not easy. Devin will do a great job and I wish that my dad could have met him, I’m sure he would have approved. Devin will have the waiting list as well as all inquiries made. He will contact you or you can contact him.

We would like to thank everyone again for your patience and your business.
